The biographical drama, My Friend Dahmer, is based from the 2012 graphic novel that had the same title and was made by a cartoonist named John 'Derf' Backderf, who had been high school friends with Jeffrey Dahmer, which was a short time before Dahmer started his spree of serial offences. The companies are now eyeing a fall 2020 theatrical release. By the conclusion of its run, it had grossed a total of 144,008 domestically. Meyers makes My Friend Dahmer a convincing high school drama, but his portrait of the serial killer as a young man telegraphs Dahmers future all too clearly. The film later expanded its release to five theaters, and remained in theatrical distribution for 27 weeks. But as they near graduation, Jeffs depravity continues to take hold, and he spirals further out of control. And telling from the trailer alone, Lynch’s portrayal of Dahmer from what I can see is conceivable at most. Dahmer began a limited release in the United States on June 21, 2002, opening in two theaters and grossing 16,093 during its first weekend. I’m almost positive he was criticized for his decision, but if you ask me, it’s a respectable first step out of Mickey Mouse’s shadow. At least as thoroughly.Ĭonsidering Lynch’s previous involvement with Disney, it’s pretty honorable of the actor to take on the role of a role like this.
While this isn’t the first time Dahmer’s life has been recounted in cinema (there are several other docu-flicks on the notorious murderer already), Backderf’s interpretation, by far, is most intriguing in that it’s the first I’ve known so far to give more than a split-second insight into Dahmer’s high school years.
